Sherry Baby(rated 'R' - on DVD) - starring Maggie Gyllenhaal
Gyllenhaal gives an 'over-looked for Oscar' performance, in her portrayal of a junkie convict, attempting to straighten out her life, in order to reclaim her young child and return their lives to normalcy. While the film may be disturbing in parts - due to adult themes, language, sex and nudity, it is certainly realistic in depicting the breakdown of societal and family values, and is well worth the rent!
Music & Lyrics - starring Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore and Haley Bennett
Another great date movie! This film was released for Valentine's Day, but after an immediate box office success, it has trailed off quickly and will soon hit DVD production. Barrymore is charming as a newly discovered lyricist for Grant's pop star persona. Grant is his usual affable, debonair self - attempting to revive a long gone popstar career. Relative newcomer beauty Haley Bennett portrays a poptart combination of Brittney Spears and Christina Aguilara - and acts and (un)dresses for the role.
Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. Very predictable - but it works - and worth it, if only to hear Barrymore, Grant and Bennett actually perform the many songs themselves! See and hear it while it is still in theaters, because it will lose some effectiveness without the audio enhancement.
