The Reel Deal
Atonement(rated R) - starring Keira Knightly, James McAvoy and Vanessa Redgrave
I must tell you, during the first 45 minutes of this film I almost wanted to get my money back, while the film slowly(very slowly) developed the characters and the plot. Set in war-ravaged England, 1935 to 1940, this a love story wrapped in a war film hidden in a melodrama - about the perceptions of a 13-year-old girl, and the effect that those perceptions have on a naive and pre-occupied adult world! The English accents and argot are often unintelligible, but Keira Knightly more than makes up for that! By the middle of the film, when all begins to come together, it is understandable why the beginning had to be as such, and while the acting was also outstanding at times(especially Redgrave, who makes the ending superb), this film is merely an over-hyped 'chick flick.' Catch it on DVD in a month or two, or atone for your sins by watching it with an only slightly larger audience at $9.25 each!
