Az I Eat It....
King's Fish House - Tempe Marketplace - Rio Salado Pkwy & McClintock
Went there for my Birthday - not disappointed, but not impressed, either! First, everyone gets as much warm bread as they desire....well, everyone but my table, evidently. It took the waitress an eternity for each new portion, and our 'loaves' were minuscule, compared to all other tables around us(and, no - I didn't know her!)
The portions were smallish, for the price, but tasted good - I had scallops, Linda had salmon, and Arky2 had swordfish. None was anything to write home about(just here!) I was brought a complimentary Creme Brulee, which was double-size the usual restaurant fare, but the large strawberry was much tastier(and fresher) than the dessert itself. All-in-all, it just seemed that something was 'fishy!'
Mercato del Gelato - close to King's Fish House, at the Tempe Marketplace
One of the best gelatos in the country! I'd compare it quite favorably to any in the North End of Boston, and as a matter-of-fact, the owner make several trips, annually, to Italy, to improve and expand his recipes! The lemon, raspberry and blood orange flavors were exquisite! And there are many more that I will taste the next time I'm in the East Valley!
Mancini's Italian Restaurant and Sandwich Shop - 5626 W. Bell Rd(in the Carrabba'a plaza)
What a birthday treat! Not only did I get to have an evening with Howie, Phil D., Bret, Wayne, Steve C., and Joel(Yes - Joel!), but the food was great, too! The portions were HUGE, the bread was hot and plentiful, the salads were good, menu was superb, and the prices were extremely reasonable - all combined with great service! I even had a beer!
The only thing not to my liking was the watered-down Italian Wedding Soup, but the manager said that he would investigate. And they have live music several evenings, each week. Do yourself a favor - just once, even - pass by Carrabba's, and go to Mancini's - You'll LOVE it!
Fox and Hound - across from Harkin's Theatre, south of W. Bell Rd & 83rd Ave, near Peoria Sports Complex
I went there years ago, and reported that they had a great all-you-can-eat Friday night fishfry, but that I would not return, because of the cigarette smoke. Well, now that there is no smoking allowed - they still have a great fishfry, but the service was slow, due to the crowds and, I think, our inexperienced waitress. Still, if you're looking for a good fishfry, cast your line to Fox and Hound!
