Az I Teach It....

- The Arizona legislature is again attempting to 'opt out' of the NCLB laws, a decision that mean a loss of an estimated $600M per year in federal education funding.  It seems that Arizona leaders just do not know how to properly educate their students, and will be damned if they will allow the feds to ridicule our schools with labels such as 'FAILING' or 'STUPID!'  If knowledge is power, then Arizona students will continue to be powerless for many more generations!

- Tempe Union High School District has ended medical benefits for future retirees, a decision that will allow modest salary/benefits increases in the short-term, but will mandate that many teachers continue working, in order to /afford maintain those precious benefits.  Affected teachers have until June 30th - yeah, that's right - JUNE 30th - to retire with medical benefits until age 65;  to retire and return under Smartschoolsplus(a sub-contract program that has been determined to weaken the Arizona State Retirement System);  or to continue working under contract, knowing that retirement medical benefits would be lost!  And several more Valley districts are rumored to be close to the same actions!
