The Reel Deal

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button(rated PG-13) - starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Julia Ormand

- This film is really a remake of Forrest Gump, even to the 2 & 1/2 hour running time.  It chronicles Ben(Pitt), born as an old man in a baby's body, who grows younger as he ages.  He falls in love with Daisy(Blanchett), who opens the film as an 87-year old on her death bed - recounting Ben's life, and hers, to her daughter Caroline(Ormand) through passages in an old diary - much the same as Forrest recounted his travails, and love of Jenny, and his newfound son.  Forrest made his millions with Bubba Gump Shrimp, while Ben had Buttons' Buttons, etc.
Like Gump, you must release your imagination to all the good that is possible, in life.  The first two hours are magical!  But the last half-hour is just so prepostrous!  The reverse aging process brings Ben full circle - emotionally AND physically, when he finally becomes a baby that Angelina Jolie could adopt!  Except for the ending, the film is a credit to the actors.  And it was nice to see Julia Ormand on the big screen again.  But even Forrest would have choked on this chocolate!
