Az I Teach It....
- Is it really that difficult to understand? The Higley Unified School District is partnering(a.k.a. paying) an ASU researcher to study teacher turnover rates - to find common reasons for staff leaving or considering resigning. Really? It has been well-publicized that Arizona teacher pay and benefits are some of the worst, nationally, combined with poor working conditions and lack of administrative and parental support. Approximately 70% of public school teachers are women, who will always bear the burden of childbirth and family stability.
The same reasons, together with Arizona's sometimes ridiculous and burdensome certification requirements, and associated expenses, prevent Arizona from attracting and retaining many qualified teachers, too! One-third of new Arizona teachers leave within two years! Higley's turnover rate is reportedly only 20% - and they're wasting valuable, limited funds financing this ridiculous study? Teachers - let this be another lesson for you!
