Az I Teach It....
- The Legislature denied an effort to delay officially notifying teachers of intent to continue employment, from April 15th to June 15th, so thousands of employees, including a couple of administrators, have received pink slips! The reasoning was that they wanted to give them enough time to seek other opportunities. With only a handful of jobs available, where will they look? Shouldn't teachers just receive 'retention bonuses,' and wait for the bailout!
- With Arizona's major universities losing tens of millions of dollars, due to budget deficits, the U of A has hired a new Head Basketball Coach, and is paying him $2M per year, plus incentives totaling almost $1M more!
- Balsz Elementary District approved an increase to 200 teaching days, for 2009-10. Teachers are scheduled to receive a 9% salary increase, while the district will receive a 5% increase in State funding, to cover an 11% increase in days. Superintendent Jeff Smith says he expects higher academic achievement. This is the same Jeff Smith whose science classes spent more time on the P.E. fields than the P.E. classes, when his career began, and always found ways to 'paas the time' when additional requirements were in order!
- A recent study reports that students participating in sports, or other physical activities, achieve higher academic success. A previous Arizona study reported the same results - 34 years ago! I did it - as part of my Master's Degree program, in 1985. Maybe Arizona really is finally catching up!
- Teacher, to parent: "Since my last report, your child has reached rock-bottom and has started to dig!"
