Az I Teach It....
- It has been discovered that many school districts have diverted money from Prop. 301 funds - voter approved for EXTRA teacher pay - and most claim that THEY interpreted the law as meaning they could use it for REGULAR pay, in lieu of state cuts to their budgets. Of the offenders, the Deer Valley District was reported to have diverted the most - as much as $1M - with officials saying it was used for maintenance, transportation, support staff, and additional administration for new student programs!
- National education standards are being drafted, and preliminary curricula for math and English appear to be years ahead of any Arizona standards, at current grade-levels. While education officials profess cooperation and interest, the truth is that 'local control' will again prevail, and the children of the Copper State will continue to suffer!
- A new moniker will be created to replace G.W. Bush's NCLB. In the meantime, Pres. Obama's 'Rise to the Top' initiative has denied grants to Arizona(which totaled $250M), deeming the state's education not to be progressive, dedicated, or committed enough(They must have read Az I See It!)
- Arizona's major universities announced that tuition will rise according to a new standard - if you still have money, they want it! As it is, available jobs, for new graduates, pay less than most other states, and along with the lack of adequate university education, it dooms them to long-term financial struggles!
- Az. Public School Stupid-Intendent Tom Horne has announced he will run for Attorney General. Not to worry - the majority of people that Horne's tenure has oppressed are not yet old enough to vote, so he will lose!
- Gotta hand it to teachers - they are consistent! Together with students and parents, they recently staged protests, over proposed budget cuts, but will take no significant action, even if legislative actions prove to be the rule!
- Highest rate of absenteeism, in Az public schools, belongs to lower to middle class White students!
- The newest drug in public schools is called Strawberry Quick(crystal meth), and looks like 'Pop Rocks,' the candy of choice for many students. It smells like strawberries, and also comes in chocolate, peanut butter, cola, cherry, grape, and orange flavors! And yet teachers still allow students to eat candy in their classrooms!
- Congratulations to Meghan Hauter(Deer Valley Middle School) for being the recipient of a $150 Murphy Mini-Grant, awarded by the All Arizona School Retirees Association!
- On the first day of school, about mid-morning, the kindergarten teacher said, "If anyone has to go to the bathroom, hold up two fingers." From the back of the room, Little Nicky asked, "How will that help?"
