The Reel Deal

Letters to Juliet(Rated PG) - starring Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave, and Christopher Egan

Okay - on May 7th, Ironman II premieres, and you know you guys are going to drag your women to see it, the first of this summer's blockbuster releases.  Well, you need to promise the ladies that in return, you will take them to see Letters to Juliet, when it is released on May 14th.
The beautiful and always charming Amanda Seyfried is Sophie, an aspiring journalist who happens upon a touching, 50-year unrequited romance tale, herself in the throes of an engagement to a married-to-the-business type.  Redgrave is Claire, the woman who as a teen, passed on an opportunity to fulfill her dreams of true love, due to family and cultural pressures in the late 1950's.  Egan is Claire's grandson Charlie, ever the cynic, and protective of Claire's emotional well-being.  Together, they set out to find Lorenzo(Franco Nero), Claire's long-lost love.
Predictable? - Sure.  Some bad acting? - Sure - but not by Seyfried or Redgrave, who are charming together.  Some schmaltzy writing in a few places prevents this film from really shining.  And the over-the-top acting of Sophie's fiance, Victor(Gael Garcia Bernal) would get him quickly tossed even from America's Got Talent!  Critics may say 'skip it,' but I gotta tell ya - it will be the first great 'date flick' of the summer.  Not just a 'chick flick,' because the humor and Chloe(I mean Seyfried) will keep the men captivatedly entertained as well!  Hey - let THIS film be your Back Up Plan!
