Movie and DVD Reviews
- The Fighter(rated R), starring Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, and Christian Bale
Mickey Ward(Wahlberg) was a real fighter, and this film really does portray his later boxing years, both tragedies and triumphs, specifically the early 1990s. This was not a great film, but it is not a bad film, either. It is simply more a film about the boxer than it is about boxing, which sometimes caused the plot to deteriorate with unnecessary distractions.
Amy Adams(Charlene Fleming, Ward's girlfriend) is always a treat to ogle, especially when she wears skimpy clothing, but the real spectacle in this is Christian Bale(Dickie Eklund), who lost a lot of weight, and must have done a lot of research, to portray this cocaine/drug-addicted former fighter, who exhibited signs of brain trauma from fighting, as well. Bale is so good, that I am predicting him as the leading candidate for winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for 2010, in this role. He is so good that it won't even be a fair fight!
Black Swan(rated R), starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis,, Barbara Hershey, Vincent Cassel
This is not a chick-flick. Your girlfriend won't like it. She may not even understand it. You will not like it, either! It is a movie about ballet dancers trying to attain the role of the Swan Queen, in the ballet Swan Lake. Nina Sayers(Portman), is a bulemic also-ran, who is also schizophrenic-paranoid. Lily(Kunis), is both her competition and love fantasy. There is one 3-minute, lesbian love scene which is not worth the price of admission(it's on the internet, for free!), but there is just so much ridiculousness that famed producer Darren Aronofsky seems to have merely worked these young starlets for his own pleasures.
This performance is supposed to make Portman a front-runner for an Oscar. Maybe for Oscar Meyer Bologna! While she trained for many months in this excruciating genre of artistic dance, even she falls short of the perfection her character seeks.
This film makes The Fighter(see above) look more like an Oscar contender for Best Picture - and that will not happen! It may, however, make you long for the likes of 'Hines, Hines, & Dad!' Now those were graceful, Black swans!
