Prologue: Nothing is so strong as gentleness. Nothing is so gentle as real strength." - Pearl S. Buck
International: Egypt's 30-year reign of dictator Hosni Mubarek is about to end, one way or another, and I keep wondering, 'Why do people cringe at the name Barack Obama?'....A Cuban woman claims to be celebrating her 126th birthday, while the Guiness Book of World Records people will only recognize a Georgia, USA woman, at 114, as the oldest living person.
National: Frank Buckles has passed away. At 110-years old, Buckles was the last surviving U.S. soldier from World War One!....Happiest town in the U.S? San Luis Obispo!....Raising taxes hurts the middle class and the poor much more than for the wealthy, but is a typically accepted practice(i.e., sales and property taxes.) However, adjusting Social Security contributions, to include incomes of greater than the present threshold of $106K, or income taxes on amounts more than $250K, will affect only the wealthy - and not by much! Presently, 2% of the U.S. population is 'holding sway' over the other 98%, and the newly elected(and extremely wealthy) Republican legislature tells us that they know what is best for us. Do you believe it? Shame on you if you do!
State: Death panels - the Az. legislature has confirmed that they will NOT revisit budgeting for transplant operations for the remaining 98 indigents awaiting theirs, citing statistics which report they would not be reasonably successful outcomes. And these Republicans are the same that chastised the Obama administration and misled the public that the newly-enacted Health Care reform created death panels of its own!....Drinking water - seems there is a problem, nationally, with high levels of perchlorate in both public and private water supplies. Perchlorate is typically used in the development of rocket fuel and other munitions. And in Arizona, arsenic is even more prevalent - and suppliers are hesitant to educate their customers on its too-high levels, which can cause cancer and birth defects in even smaller than legally-allowed amounts! So, if you drink bottled water, like I do(and we've been ridiculed for spending the money and filling the landfills), let's drink to that!
Local: Get ready for it - On Saturday, February 26th(9:00am to 2:00pm), AARP Chapter #1, in cooperation with the Town of Youngtown Az., BBVA Compass Bank, and the Maricopa County Health Assn., will present the 2nd Annual Health Fair, in Greer Park(Youngtown.) Attendance is FREE, and will include more than sixty(60) vendors and exhibitors - including the Walgreens Wellness Tour Bus - for many valuable health screenings, products and services, a Farmer's Market, giveaways, raffles, food sampling from some of the best local restaurants in the West Valley, entertainment, etc. - and did I mention it was FREE? Yes, I did - FREE!
Epilogue: "When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying." - Laura Fletcher
