The Reel Deal
Never Let Me Go(rated R, on DVD) - starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield
In 1960's England, there exists a program by which undesirables' children are taken away and raised as parts replacements for the more suitable populations. Only verifiable true love may prolong the donation process, which usually ends in the donors' 'completion' after three to four donations - sooner, when the will to live is lost.
Kathy(Mulligan) has loved Tommy(Garfield) from the time they were first enrolled in the program, and Ruth(Knightley) is the jealous vixen in the middle. All are potential donors, but the love shared between Kathy and Tommy is their hope for at least a few years together before completion.
Why did this film not do well at the box-office? Transformers and Iron Man are much more believable than organ donations for profit? This was a sometimes gritty, thought-provoking love story, and deserves to be seen by the masses. Mulligan is superb, though the genre and script doesn't lend itself to awards. Garfield is able, and sometimes spectacular, while Knightley, as always, is beautiful and on-target with her performance, as well! If you purchase DVD's, you may never let this one go!
