Evidently the right message recently surfaced, when it became known that the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger knew about, and approved, transfers of child-abusing priests - and protected them, instead of exposing their atrocities, and turning them over to the proper authorities. Oh - and Ratzinger is now known as Pope Benedict XVI!

National: "Life's tough. It's even tougher if you're stupid!" - John Wayne....The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the use of the words 'In God We Trust' on U.S. currency, and 'Under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag!....The Dept. of Homeland Security announced that implementation of advanced cargo-screening technology has been scrapped, claiming it is too expensive, and that the new, human strip-search machines are way-cool already!....A now-senior Taliban commander was a prisoner at Gitmo, until he convinced the Bush Administration that he was just a simple man, wanting to return to his family, so he was released in 2008. Bush-whacked again!....U.S. Education secretary Arne Duncan says the title No Child Left Behind will soon be dropped, in favor of a still-to-be-decided title. How about Stop Throwing Us Politically Inept Designs(STUPID)....My home town, Buffalo, NY, ranks as the nation's 8th most miserable city. Cleveland, OH ranks 1st!

State: As the nation set their clocks forward, observing Daylight savings Time, Arizona set their clocks back another 20 years, passing legislation which will plunge hundreds of thousands of citizens into further debt and squalor. The 2010 budget slashes funding for many major programs(children, seniors & social services) and education, while maintaining many tax breaks for the wealthiest of Arizonans - including the legislature! All government employees employees will take pay cuts, except for state legislators, who have already far-surpassed their annual salaries with extra per diem allotments for the historical extra-sessions required to pass the State budget!....The new budget depends upon a May 18th vote to increase the State sales tax by almost 18% - from 5.6% to 6.6%. With city taxes, we will pay almost a 10% tax on most purchases! The legislature has proven - almost EVERY time - that they cannot be trusted with our tax monies. Why should we vote to increase what we give them? Vote NO on an increase in Arizona's sales taxes!....And now the legislature wants to repeal the law that created term limits, saying it is too difficult to do business when people must consistently be trained to the order of business. THAT is why term limits came about(74% approval in 1992) - because the people were tired of the way the 'Good Old Boy' system conducted business! Let's keep it the way it is, and elect officials with integrity, intelligence and ingenuity - not greediness, gluttony, and gormandizing!

Local: Arizona Diamondbacks officials are urging passage of an additional countywide sales tax increase to support MLB Spring Training facilities. Why not have the teams pony up? In the present economy, and with those same teams still maintaining record gate receipts, it is just too expensive for he locals - who are already staring-down a 1% increase in the State sales tax!....A Scottsdale police officer. routinely assigned to high-profile, dangerous felony cases, is under investigation because he has been involved in six justified shooting incidents. Amazing he isn't investigated for his courage-under-fire!

Epilogue: There is always something to be thankful for. If you cannot pay your bills, you can be thankful you are not one of your creditors!

Green Zone(rated R) - starring Matt Damon

If you are a FOX News devotee, you may as well not see this film. As entertaining as it is, it puts a 'conspiracy theory' to the forefront, re: Why did the U.S. really invade Iraq? Matt Damon is Chief Army Officer Roy Miller, concerned that U.S. intelligence is always wrong about the whereabouts of any WMD's - the major emphasis on the U.S. over-throwing Saddam Hussein. Miller is thwarted, by high-ranking U.S. officials, in his efforts to obtain the truth, because it would make the Bush Administration appear to be liars, murderers, and worse!
If you liked the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker, this is even better! Not that it will win any Academy Awards, but The Hurt Locker didn't necessarily deserve all of its plaudits, either! Filled with action, worthwhile dialogue and intelligence(and humor), it will be worth your movie money to see it on the big screen. As for why the U.S. went into Iraq? This film says we were Bush-whacked!

Pappadeux's Seafood Kitchen, on the northbound I-17 frontage road, between Peoria and Cactus Rds(Phx, Az.)

     It was another Guy's Night Out, and this was a long-overdue return to a fine establishment. Specializing in Cajun-style seafood cuisine, I don't think that there is anything on the menu that is of less-than-superior quality! The portions are plentiful, the prices appropriate, the atmosphere comfortable. I had the Australian Lobster Tail(10oz.; $29.95), with Jambalaya, instead of Dirty Rice and Broccoli. Great choice(but you must insist!) Others tried the Big Bay Platter($25.95; Shrimp, Caribbean Lobster Tail, Dirty Rice, etc.), and the Stuffed Shrimp Montage($19.95).
   Then came the desserts($6.95) - overly-healthy portions of several varieties of cheesecake, bread pudding, banana pudding, cakes, and the BEST Creme Broulee in the Valley - exquisitely presented - FRESH, and accompanied with several varieties of fresh fruit(blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries - and a tasty cookie wafer!) I've made the mistake of spending more(for a lot less satisfaction) at Red Lobster!
     Pappadeaux's is a national brand, with varied cuisines, and several other names across the southwest, Illinois, Ohio, and Georgia(Pappasito's Cantina, Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Pappas Bros. Seafood House, Pappas Bar-B-Q, Pappas Burger, Pappas Grill Steakhouse, and Yia Yia Mary's Greek Kitchen.) Though I've only been to the Seafood Kitchen in Phoenix, my experiences tell me that I'd have no reservations about trying the others!

Crazy Heart(rated PG-13) - starring Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhall

I would be remiss if I did not review this film before the Academy Awards(this Sunday!) In fact, I'd be Crazy! Jeff Bridges is older C & W performer, divorced/alcoholic/down-on-his-luck kind of guy, who meets a small-town wanna-be reporter(Gyllenhall), who is divorced, with a child. Wouldn't you know it, they fall in love, but his misgivings are continuous, and the relationship ends.
What's the buzz about Oscar for Bridges? Who knows? It is simply overblown hype, for an actor who lays around acting drunk throughout the film. Gyllenhall deserves a stab at Best Supporting Actress, but that's a stretch, too! Best Song? - I hope not! The trailers add Robert Duvall, as an attraction, but his role is so minimal that Nick Habeeb could have done it! Hey, guys - even your wife won't buy into this movie, so if you decide to see it, you have a Crazy Heart!

- The USA Today reports that more high-schoolers are failing advanced placement tests, in Az. That means they will remain stock clerks, etc., instead of having careers as cashiers!

- The Arizona legislature will approve an increase in allowable Private School tuition tax credits, and attempt to end, or further limit, Public School tax credits. Most legislators, and their extended families, enroll their children in private schools. Go figure!

- First, no more seniority rights. Now, no more pay! Arizona legislators will soon attempt to implement a plan for teacher merit pay-only raises. Accountability will be placed solely on the teacher, with no consideration of student/family accountability or responsibility - and NOT on the already overpaid administrations, either!

- Arizona School Board officials fear that Pres. Obama's proposed school reform, 'Race to the Top,' the successor to Bush's NCLB, will lead to diminished local control, and not be in the best interest of Arizona children. Yeah, like that's working!

- Mr. Phipps asked his students, "Can people predict the future with cards?" "My mother can," said Little Nicky. "She takes one look at my report card and tells me what will happen when my father gets home!"

- CNN's financial whiz - Clark Howard - says to save money on the simple maintenance items for your automobile, like air filter replacement or wiper blades(about $30 each.) Says you'll save money and time, instead of going to a dealer or mechanic, and get a sense of satisfaction, too! Thanks Clark - how many people have the tools, the knowledge and adeptness to work 'under the hood' anymore? And have you ever dropped a screw in the engine compartment, or accidentally dislodged an air/vaccuum hose? Here's a better idea - if you have an Auto Zone retail store in your area(or a similar chain), they will typically install those easy-to-reach items(filters, wiper blades, etc.), when you purchase them at their store - for FREE! Otherwise, if Clark Howard(idiot!) cannot do it for you, pay the Piper!

- Major health insurer profits are up 56% over 2008, even though almost 3 million less people are insured. Premiums are rising much faster than consumer inflation, and more claims are being denied. People still blame Obama, even though NO health care reform has been enacted! Wake up, people!

- Are college degrees worth it? Rcent studies question the value of a Bachelor's degree, citing high unemployment, low wages and benefits, and generlly poor academic standards and preparation. Seems you should be able to party for four year for a lot less than many parents are shelling out for their students! It's still 'who you know,' more than 'what you know!'

- Log-on to www.vpike.com to view just about any address in the U.. - including your childhood home, present address, etc. You may have to use your mouse to 'turn' across the street, but it is pretty cool!

Both are potentially deadly distracted driving activities!....The Centers for Disease Control(CDC) will recommend male circumcision, as a preventive measure against HIV, just as the same IRS procedure has been successful in promoting the IOU!....Herbie, the giant elm tree, has died, at age 217. The Maine Forest Service had to cut down the massive landmark, which finally succumbed to its 14th bout with Dutch Elm Disease. When a DUI arrest is made, vehicles are released as soon as someone comes to retrieve them - typically the bailed-out drunk!

The Hurt Locker(rated R) - starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, and Guy Pierce

If you really want to see how American GIs have dealt with the realities of the Iraq War, this is the film to see. And if you know anyone who has served - or will serve - in Iraq or Afghanistan, this film may be gut-wrenching. Intense, action-packed, and real-to-life, a U.S. Army demolition/bomb squadron counts down the days until their 'rotation' is finished, and they can return to the ones they love - if they return at all. You will find yourself holding your breath, with anxiousness, at times.
This film has already garnered support for Academy Awards, but while it may be deserving under different political/social circumstances, it is just not the right time - the world is not yet ready to appreciate the calamity of these on-going wars. It is too early to believe it. It hurts too much!

National: NBC's first mistake was in thinking that Conan O'Brien was too valuable to lose to another network. The former SNL writer was certainly out of his element in late-night television, as evidenced by his plummeted ratings in the 11:30pm(Eastern) time slot. And Jay Leno discovered how fleeting success is, when his 10pm, nightly show bombed, also!....O'Brien claims a victory in assuring that his staff was 'taken care of,' before agreeing to a reported $35M payoff, but it was only two years earlier, when he, Leno, and Jimmy Kimmel crossed writer's strike lines, and went back on-air without them. Only David Letterman and Craig Ferguson returned WITH pre-arranged settlements for their writers!....I hope that ABC-TV will soon realize that Diane Sawyer is not as valuable as they once thought, either, and return Charlie Gibson(from his 'retirement') to his former World News program, and send Sawyer packing. Maybe Sawyer and O'Brien will both end up on Comedy Central!

State/Local: Arizona officials have recommended that 13 state parks be closed. While these tourist attractions may not be as income-producing as the ones that will remain open, Arizona would save more money by closing the State Legislature, whose costs continue to be precipitous and evermore burdensome!....Taxpayers built the University of Phoenix Stadium for the Bidwill family and the NFL's Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals then built a street accessing the stadium, and deeded it to the City of Glendale for eternal maintenance. The Cards claimed they still possessed control over advertising on the street, and Arizona courts agreed. Now Glendale must pay more than $213K in court costs - to the Bidwills/Cards! And why is Glendale pushing for another Super Bowl? Even though it brings hundreds of millions in revenue, it ends up costing the state and city governments more than is earned, and only the NFL and the Bidwill's make money. And 10,000 volunteers are need to pull it off - 10,000 - VOLUNTEERS! Wake up, people!....The Diocese of Phoenix will soon require 9 months of pre-marriage counseling, before allowing couples to marry in the Catholic Church. Predictions persist that it will lead to less formal marriage and more co-habitation. No word yet on whether altar boy/priest relationships will be subject to the same rules!

Every Tuesday, during the month of February, just show your school ID badge, at any of the 29 valley Dunkin Donuts, and receive a FREE medium, hot or iced coffee. What - no donut? Well you're not appreciated THAT much!

- Arizona may soon replace the mandatory, and under-served AIMS tests with some form of nationally-normed standardized test - you know - like n the olden days of the 1970s - 1980s, when school administrators were too embarrassed to show those same tests' results, due to a lack of sufficient curriculum and student expectations. And so, the circle/cycle continues!

- The most recent 'Quality Counts' report places Arizona 46th, nationally, in the 'Teaching Profession,' due to a lack of professional growth requirements; 43rd in 'School Finance,' due to consistently low per pupil spending; and 44th in 'K-12 Achievement,' based upon consistent lack of achievement in nationally-normed math and reading tests.

     Unfathomable tragedy and distress! Thousands are homeless, countless dying or dead, with little or no food/water, no medical care, sleeping under bushes or cardboard, or whatever they may find to shelter their children from Mother Nature's wrath, and are begging in the streets. Haiti? No - I'm writing about the daily lives of American citizens - in major cities across the United States. That's right - Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Phoenix, Houston, etc., and each of the small-town American cities in-between - and while a celebrity musical tel-a-thon raised more than $350M, and the U.S. government has pledged more than $1B in aid for Haitians, these Americans will continue to suffer, as other nations assumes that the world's caretaker/safekeeper - the USA - will take care of their own, as they take care of others, and the USA is too extended and busy caretaking for others to take care of their own - and so the suffering continues.
     So, you may text HAITI to 90999, donating $10 to the American Red Cross' disaster relief fund(I did), or you may donate as much, or more, to your local food bank, Salvation Army, Goodwill, a local women's abuse shelter, or any other legitimate charitable organization that will aid U.S. citizens(I do that, too!)
   Maybe your neighbor, or your friend, or a friend-of-a-friend, or a family member needs assistance - and maybe they're too proud or embarrassed to ask for a similar $10 text. Or maybe they're not as well connected. Reach out - be their connection! And urge your government representatives to do the same!

     At the most recent AARP Chapter #1 meeting, State Director David Mitchell presented AARP's reasons for endorsing the current health care reform package, and dispelled the misrepresentations that is meant to scare senior citizens - including Sen McCain's admonition to 'tear up your AARP card, and send it back - they have sold you out!'
     Mr. Mitchell explained that the supposed $450M in Medicare cuts - over a 10-year period - are directed at eliminating wasteful and fraudulent payments, as well as eliminating a 14% subsidy that all Medicare recipients are now paying for elitist programs on the Medicare Advantage program. This is intended to improve solvency for Medicare, while offering the same, or more benefits than previously. And while Republican legislators attempted to eliminate long-term care benefits, AARP lobbyists successfully fought to keep long-term care included! And the prescription drug 'donut hole' will be closed(presently costing those affected up to $4,550 annually!)
     No Social Security COLA this year? That has nothing to do with health care reform, but is from a formula designed during the Bush administration. Pres. Obama is pushing for a $250 payout to offset the increased Medicare premiums, etc.
     All questions were satisfactorily answered, even if disagreements continued, and Mr. Mitchell vowed to answer anyone's questions. There are some problems, however, that remain unanswered, ie., how can insurance companies raise premiums now, when health care reform - if it happens - is still at least two years away? Why, then, are defeatists declaring this to be Pres. Obama's fault? Why are people being led to believe that they will no longer have supplemental coverage?
     And finally, I remember when I was a kid - 1965 - when the same hysteria prevailed as Pres. Lyndon Johnson initiated a 'socialistic, government-run health care system' - Medicare! And yet, today, are there any seniors willing to relinquish the benefits that the Republicans claim they will soon lose? By the way, if the Republicans were in power, I think the Democrats may have used the same tactics. In the meantime, stay healthy!

This recreation of the renowned Holmes' adventures presents Downey, Jr., and Law as if they were the next Newman and Redford - with the flair of Penn and Teller! The special effects were kind of cool, and the stunt choreography was exacting, but the enchanting McAdams too-small role could not save this too-long comedic/dramatic tale, and having to explain everything was only necessary because you are caught in the middle of your yawns. If you really want to see each act exposed and explained - go see Penn & Teller - they're funnier!

     Billing itself as 'The Best Italian in Prescott' - NOT! The pasticcio, lasagna and pork schnitzels(huh?) were poor, and the Greek salad was just 'okay.' So, if you're near Prescott, and in the mood for Italian food, settle for Arby's!

- Caffe Italia - 4201 N. 7th Ave, in Phoenix

    Always searching for quality Italian food, at affordable prices, and utilizing www.restaurant.com for gift certificates, I came across Caffe Italia for the most recent Guys Night Out. A hole-in-the-wall establishment, in a somewhat seedier part of town, we were amazed at the taste of the food(most dishes, all plentiful, in the $7 to $12 range, includes salad and focascia bread) - all except for mine! As usual, mine was the worst - veal parmesan. Very tough - could not be cut with just a fork, and could not be chewed with just your teeth(huh?)
     Anyway, Steve ordered the same, and with the same result. Others ordered eggplant parmesan, penne pasta Bolonese, and angel hair pasta with rosa sauce - and they loved it! Just my luck! Then, I figured I'd better come away with something good to say, so I ordered the cheesecake for dessert(only $3) - and received a still partially-frozen slice of Costco NY Cheesecake - how disappointing! Again, to be fair, PJ ordered the Tiramasu(homemade), and reported that it was the best he's had outside the North End of Boston - quite a compliment! So, if you order the right entrees, you'll most likely enjoy Caffe Italia. And it's nowhere near Prescott!

- The 2010 Fiesta Bowl was a great success, with Boise State defeating TCU, 17-10, and the tailgaters were highlighted on national television. This was at the same venue - University of Phoenix Stadium - at which the NFLs Arizona Cardinals officials declared 'NO TAILGATING' at any time, after their games began! Thank you, again, Misters Bidwill.

- Mark McGwire finally admitted to, and apologized for, his many years of steroid use, in becoming one of MLBs greatest, all-time sluggers. Then he blew it, claiming that it did nothing to enhance his 'God-given abilities!' Yeah, right! No Hall of Fame for YOU! And others, such as Randy Johnson - and all of the pitchers who were able to throw 98% of their pitches at 100mph, until testing started(and then they tailed-off into the mid/high 80s/low 90s) - should also be kept out of 'The Hall!'

National: Texas, Ohio, and Virgina, always among the nation's leaders in criminal executions, report much lower rates of death penalty sentencing. While the Death Penalty Info Center(an anti-execution faction) provides other rationalization, it is clear that violent criminals are more likely heading to states, such as Arizona(among the 'weakest'), so that capital punishment would not be an option, if caught and convicted!....Black-tailed prairie dogs have been denied protection, under the 'Endangered Species Act,' and Rev. Al Sharpton immediately claimed racial discrimination, as white-tailed prairie dogs always receive protection!....Janet Napolitano refused to keep illegal aliens out of Arizona. How could it be expected that she keep the U.S. safe from terrorists, as Homeland Security Secretary? Two years ago, while pretending to be Arizona's governor, she chided the Bush administration for not providing federal funding for border security. Now that she is in control of that budget, she refuses funding the same - further contributing to Arizona's massive deficit!....Rush Limbaugh was recently hospitalized, in Hawaii, with chest pains and headaches. Hospital officials announced that after extensive testing, they found nothing - no heart, and no brain!....Sex scientists report that the G-spot is just a myth. But a C-spot continues to prove effective!

State/Local: The Arizona Supreme Court has declined to hear a lawsuit from teacher advocates, that would free teachers from the more-subservient conditions of recently-enacted legislation, which forbids teacher seniority(for retention and re-hiring procedures), and eliminates contract-date issue restrictions(hey, it's for the kids!)....Sens. Kyl and McCain are bitching about health care reform, saying Arizonans may end up subsiding other state's Medicare beneficiaries. These are the same two clowns who refuse all federal funds for what THEY consider to be 'pork' projects - thereby subsidizing all other states with OUR federal tax dollars - while Arizona coffers are now bankrupt!....And Gov. Brewer wants to balance the budget, yet refuses to disallow public services to all illegals!....The Arizona MVD will close 12 offices, due to lack of funds, yet all rental car agencies are still allowed to register their vehicles in Florida - because it's cheaper - all this while a push is on to add food and sales taxes!....Arizona DUIs are up 40%, in one year. Arizonans are last in so many categories, they'll be damned if you think they won't be first in this one!

Epilogue: Flying high, aboard their luxurious jetliner, Sen. McCain looked at Sen. Kyl and said, "I would make someone very happy, if I could throw a $1,000 bill out the window." Sen. Kyl replied, "I would make ten people happy, if I could throw ten $100 bills out the window." The pilot, overhearing the banter, said to the co-pilot, "I would make 65 million people very happy, if I could throw the two of them out the window!

     On Wednesday, I received a voicemail(7am), from my mother-in-law, Adelaide, who was obviously fraught with angst(that's a GREAT phrase, isn't it?), wanting me to return her call - it was 'urgent....extremely important.' Responding within minutes(I'm very fast - ask my wife!), she informed me that she had just received a call from the Quebec, Canada police, informing her that my son and his buddy had been arrested, after being stopped while driving through Canada, and having drugs found in the vehicle. The officer assured her that the drugs were not my son's, but that they were both taken into custody, pending further action, and that he would need to post bail to be released.
     Then, my 'son' was put on the phone, and he said, 'Hi, Grandma, it's Michael. Please don't tell my parents. I don't want them to know I'm in trouble, so please just follow the officer's directions, and send the bail money." The officer then gave her the address to wire/send payment, and a follow-up phone number, with his name - Officer Brower - to proceed with the transaction, and in case she had any further questions. Naturally upset and feeling helpless, she then called her son, and explained what had happened. He told her 'it didn't sound quite right,' and that she should call me. Thank God she did! I assured her that my son was nowhere near Canada, that I was elated that she had the sensibility to be able to ask for help, as secrecy(and later embarrassment) is of utmost importance for this scam to be successful - and that she should call the Attorney General's Office immediately - and then we both shared a comforting laugh!
     This scam preys on the frailty, angst, and instinctive, protective love of senior citizens! The location of the arrest is typically Canada or Mexico, and those most likely to be scammed are typically living quite a distance from the 'arrested,' so that the possiblities presented may be plausible. It is not typical for the caller to know the grandchild's name(although that information is easily accessible through on-line social websites, ie., Facebook, MySpace, Classmates.com, etc.), so they usually begin with an ambiguous salutation, ie., "Hello, Grandma, it's me." Concerned and almost wanting to recognize the voice, the typical response may be, "Is that you, Michael?" Then they have the hook! Let's face it - the hearing of the elderly(especially in the morning, and via a cell phone connection) may not be as sharp as it may need to be. It sounds like it IS your grandchild! The amount of bail is typically $4000 to $5000, but may be reduced to $3000 or less after 'haggling.' The phone number given may be an untraceable cell phone, and the only Sergeant you should be contacting is at your local police precinct!
     I forgot to tell Adelaide that they would call again, if not receiving a timely response, so when I realized my omission, I called her. She said that she had already received their second call(only 15 minutes later!), which began with, "You're such a sweet lady...." And she quickly responded, "Yeah, and I'm a smart lady, too!" They then immediately hung up. And she did contact the New York State Attorney General's Office, who said that they were aware of this scam, and 'we are working on it.' They were not interested in the phone number given, or where the call may have originated from, or the traumatic experience that had occurred - SHAME ON THEM! If this happened in Arizona, Terry Goddard's Office would hunt them down - or at least TRY!
     Anyway, please make sure that family members are protected from this scam(and others), by relating this event, and by offering your assistance in any matter necessary - and to recognize any offer with even a suggestion of 'secrecy' to be a 'red flag!' And if you live in Arizona, you can log-on to www.azag.gov for scam alerts and updates, or to report scams. If you don't live in Arizona(it's 70 degrees on January 6th!), contact your state's Attorney General's Office, and inquire as to their consumer protection services. And, Michael, call your grandma!

Avatar(rated PG-13), in 3D at the IMAX - starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver

     My sons said that this was the 'BEST Movie of All Time' - and urged me to see it. I remember being 14-years old, and sneaking into an 'over-17 only' film - Barbarella - starring a pre-Nam, always naked Jane Fonda. That, for a 14-year old, was the Best Movie of All Time! Combining cutting-edge special effects, science-fiction, imagination, and nudity! And the plot? Well, who cared about the plot!?
     Decades have passed, and great films have been chronicled and forgotten, but some will stand-out forever. Avatar will be one of them. A combination of Star Wars, Braveheart and Jurassic Park, with science-fiction, imagination, and nudity! And the plot? Yeah - you even care about the plot! The genius of James Cameron, ie., the creatures, machinations, cutting-edge special effects, 3D technologies, and filming techniques. This film should sweep every award it is nominated for - and why isn't it nominated for everything else it was eligible for?
     If you make the mistake of seeing it in format other than 3D, you wasted your money. And even regular 3D would be lacking the IMAX quality. So pay the extra - just this once! It is worth the money! And every 14-year old will emerge with the same decades-old excitement. But the BEST Movie of All Time? Well, that's Barbarella!

Hoping to find water, he headed towards this oasis, only to find a little old Jewish man at a small stand, selling ties. The terrorist asked, "Do you have water?" "No, but would you like a nice tie?" asked the old Jew. The terrorist shouted, "Idiot! I do not need a tie - I need water! I should kill you! But I need water first!" Up In The Air(rated PG-13) - starring Vera Farmiga, George Clooney, and Anna Kendrick

Ryan Bingham(Clooney) is a 'terminator,' a specialist in corporate down-sizing. With no close friends or family, he typicaly adds 300K-plus frequent flyer miles to his account, annually - happily and literally living his life 'up in the air.' Alex Goran(Farmiga), has a similarly-affected life, with much travel, and enters into a mutually gratifying, no-strings-attached, on-the-fly(so-to-speak) relationship with Bingham. Natalie Keener(Kendrick) is the up-and-comer terminator, looking to send Clooney and his ilk to the dinosaur graveyard, by using technology to effect corporate lay-offs, thereby saving their own company millions in travel-related expenses.
The writing was very clever, and in some places very profound and heartfelt. The acting was above average, with the ladies, as ever, swooning over Clooney; and for the men - the beautiful, charming Farmiga, who is very busy in films these days. The Golden Globes have found this film to be exceptional, nominating it for several awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor(Clooney), among others. This is a good 'date movie,' but NOT Golden Globe quality. And with so many other holiday blockbuster releases, how long this one will remain on the big screen is up-in-the-air!

Energy is still a better investment!....Legislation in Uganda would allow for the execution of gays, while in the U.S., states are debating whether or not to allow gay marriage. Same thing!

National: ABC-TV will regret dumping Charles Gibson, to appease Diane Sawyer, much the same as NBC-TV already regrets moving Jay Leno to the 10pm time slot, to appease the idiotic Conan O'Brien!....100 years ago, boxing great Jack Johnson, the first Black to win the world heavyweight championship, was later convicted of having sex with a White woman. A recently attempted posthumous pardon was denied by the U.S. Justice Department. It is suspected that President Obama will grant the pardon, as soon as he grants a pardon for Tiger Woods!....The legendary Bat Masterson has died. Acted on early television by Gene Barry, who also portrayed the lead character in Burke's Law, Barry has died, at the age of 90. Most young boys reveled with their gold-tipped canes, which secreted a derringer in the handle, in the days when toy guns were just that, and not career training as they are today!....Medicare premium increases for 2010 were planned and approved in the 2002 and 2008 legislative sessions, but Republicans are trying to blame it on Obama, while the president is working to ensure seniors are provided with a $250 payment to make up for the increases and lack of COLA increases. Who's your Daddy?....Republicans also failed in their attempts to derail any long-term care coverage from reform laws. FOX News then reported that Republicans were being misrepresented!Still watching FOX News?....Democratic Senators are happy - many receiving pork project funds for their states, included in the health care reform legislation. Meanwhile, Sen. McCain(R - Az), who says he NEVER accepts any pork monies, and represents one of the then poorest states, is outraged that they are getting the funds; and Schwarzenegger(R - Ca) is outraged that he could not get any(he voted against reform!)....

State: ASU President Michael Crow is urging graduates, most facing immediate unemployment, to help the U.S. economy to recover, by paying back their ASU loans, and donating to the university!....The Centers for Disease Control reports that Arizona ranks 5th, nationally, in 'Happy!' Louisiana, Hawaii, and Florida are 1, 2, and 3, respectively. New York City ranks 50th. The study was based on such factors as good schools(Az ranks 49th), low crime(Az ranks among the worst, annually), and short commute times(Arizonans think they are among the worst!) Data was evidently provided by School Stupid-Intendent Tom Horne, Public Safety Detractor, Jack Harris, and Short-term commute(hopefully) Gov. Jan Brewer!....Newly proposed federal job stimulus plans are not expected to make any difference for Arizonans, as Arizona jobs don't pay much, and most Arizonans are tired of working, anyway!

Local: The new Beardsley/Loop 101 connection construction bid has come in at $16M under expectations. While city officials rejoice in this time of economic uncertainty, the final tally will most likely be only $32M over budget!

Epilogue: The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner is said to be 'the greatest plane in the sky!' Sure - but how will it handle if it has to land on the Hudson River?

- According to anonymous sources, the ASRS contributions for the 2010-2011 school-year will increase from the present 9.1% to at least 9.85% Future increases wil be likely, and larger, if district budgets are slashed by eliminating higher-paid veteran teachers - a scenario that seems more likely each day!

- A recent Arizona Census report exclaims that teen pregnancies drop-off significantly after age 25.

- A teacher friend of mine will confidently sneeze into his elbow or sleeve - refuse to shake hands, for fear of contracting the H1N1 Swine Flu contamination - and freely gives hugs. Yeeeew!

In Arizona, there are several independently allowable tax CREDITS(check your individual state - I'm told most have similar tax credit programs!) Instead of giving your hard-earned dollars to the ever-so-efficient state government, you can contribute to your favorite local charities, and receive dollar-for-dollar credit, while receiving federal deductions, too! Here are four of them:

1. Public Schools Tax Credits - for extra-curricular activities only - up to $400 per married couple, filing jointly.

2. Private Schools Tuition Tax Credits - for tuition only - up to $1,000

3. Working Poor Tax Credits - for approved 501(c)3 organizations - up to $400 - to see which qualify, log-on to: www.azdor.gov/taxcredits/charitabletaxcredit.aspx

4. Military Family Relief Fund Tax Credits - for military families of those killed in combat - up to $400 For the contribution brochure and form, log-on to: www.azmfrf.gov/mfrf.htm

As an aside - Arizona legislators will attempt to eliminate the Public School Tax Credit, while increasing the Private School Tax Credit to $1,500. This will enable all legislators whose children attend private schools(most of them!) to have their children's tuitions fully paid, annually!

Brothers(rated R) - starring Jake Gyllenhall, Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, and Bailee Madison

     An Afghanistan war vet(Maguire) returns home after being thought to be killed-in-action, to find that he cannot cope with personal and societal issues - even thinking that his previously no-good brother(Gyllenhall) had been having an affair with his wife(Portman).
     The script and plot lines were poorly constructed and awkward in just a few places, eliciting short-term disappointment, and there is little chemistry between Portman and Maguire. Individually, the performances were outstanding - and at least two are worthy of Oscar consideration, ie., Bailee Madison, as one of Maguire/Portman's two young daughters, is the next Dakota Fanning, portraying a range of emotions seemingly uncanny for such a young(although already seasoned) actress. And then there's Maguire - with a performance on the same level as Robert Deniro in Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, or Raging Bull(for which De Niro won the Oscar!)
     An intense film, on the order of The Messenger, but not quite as compelling to see at high-dollar prices, so see it at the matinee. But if you miss it - oh Brother!

     Do NOT miss this film! One of the year's best - a retrospective of human nature and parental instinct, in conflict with real life. The lovelies Barrymore and Beckinsale play De Niro's daughters, a man attempting to reconnect with his children after the passing of his long-time wife. While Barrymore melts your heart with every scene she is in, this film will define De Niro, as True Grit defined John Wayne, and could propel him towards an Oscar nomination! Bring your Kleenex(yeah, you guys, especially!), but believe you me - Everybody's Fine!

     Well, folks, it's the time of year when Christmas and Hannukah are celebrated world-wide, and this year is more special than most. Santa Claus needs your help - more specifically, your prayers. And not just the Christian Santa, but the Jewish Santa, too!
     Jeremiah Halbert, formerly of Scottsdale, Az., but more recently from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is courageously battling an aggressive form of liver cancer for which there is no cure, and no treatment, other than making him comfortable. There are hundreds of children, who knew Jerry as 'Santa,' through gatherings at my house, whom to this day believe that he is the 'real' Santa - and he is, always making the Christmas seasons so very special.
     And then there's Howie Mallin - the 'Jewish Santa' - whose later-life has been dedicated to helping others, especially through his work in the public schools, with special needs students - including his annual stints as Santa! Howie will have open-heart bypass surgery, this morning, at Thunderbird Hospital, in Glendale, Az.
     Both men have their friends and families with them, but please keep them foremost in your thoughts and prayers. I DO believe in Santa Claus - two of them!

You would also have allowable deductions for your Federal taxes, also, thus helping each of these organizations and receiving a return on your 'investment.'

The Republicans now in Congress vowed to not let the same happen with Barack Obama!....Health care reform will supposedly cost $840B over ten years, saving thousands of American lives, whereas the Bush Administration spent $1.2T in only six years to kill/maim more than 50K Americans!....Hollywood insiders claim Angelina Jolie hates President Obama. State/Local: Auto thefts are down, along with murders and other violent crimes - and state and local politicians are attributing te trend to improved technology and better enforcement efforts. They refuse to give acclaim to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, whose anti-drug and crime sweeps have brought only retribution and defiance from those directly and indirectly affected by his successes! - The recent UCFW-threatened strike(25,000 employees) was averted. I recently discovered that when Basha's closed thirteen of its stores, managers were transferred with full salary and benefits, while employees were laid-off, then rehired and transferred, without benefits and seniority, as new employees!
It is, unfortunately, necessary to maintain workers' unions, to prevent a loss of workers' standards of living and workplace conditions. A record number of U.S. companies reported profits for the 3rd quarter of 2009, but the profits were due to cutbacks in staff, salary, and benefits - and NOT from an increase in sales!

- Basha's recently had Starkist Tuna on sale(from $2.19/can to $1.99/can) Regular price at Walmart for identical item - $1.34/can.

- Fresh and Easy Markets will begin opening in the East Valley in early 2010, while West Valley stores should be open by April/May 2010 - even though they've been sitting there - ready-to-go - for almost two years!

- Where were the 'greenies' when the Capital Christmas tree was cut down in Arizona?

- Have you noticed that most manhole covers are constructed such that one of your tires must pass directly over them - and they are usually not flush with the street!

- My clothes and new car reek of cigarette smoke - and no smoker has ever been inside! I'm tired of smelling other drivers' smoke when they are in front of, or beside, my car, and their smell chokes into my AC system. Roll your windows up and gag on it yourself....please!

- The Az. Public School Tuiton Tax Credit program is under scrutiny by lawmakers claiming very little savings($8M) have been saved, while much is lost to state coffers. - More union/legal problems? What if Arizona school districts begin to issue employees 'Letters of Intent to Rehire,' as they have in the past to circumcise the previous April/May 15th contract-issuing deadline? Does that mean teachers may not seek employment elsewhere, while district administrators wait for the State Legislature to decide upon funding? Then teachers could not leave their district until actually receiving a lay-off notice, possibly much too late to be hired elsewhere! Thanks, Master Brewer!

- Phased-retirement programs for educators were created for administrators, and offered to regular employees to lure them into a sense of false appreciation. Many quality, deserved veteran teachers have not availed themselves of this lucrative arrangement, because of the one-way restrictions that could cost them their jobs. Some teachers have confided that they were told point blank - 'retire for a phased-retirement program and you will be replaced.' Why? Because they are not liked! Administrators are not affected by these restrictions, as they are 'in the loop.' With the recent union-busting, anti-teacher legislation, it doesn't matter anymore, as a purge is on the way. If you qualify, take the money and run - you're toast anyway!

- A recent poll of teachers reveals that student-texting may help them to succeed in class - especially when texting the questions and answers to tests!

- Arizona's major universities are seeking a method to assist students in graduating quicker, thus saving money for the universities and the students. One option on the table is to issue worthless diplomas after only three years of partying, instead of after the present average of five years - for the same worthless diplomas!

The Blind Side(rated PG-13) - starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Jae Head, and Lily Collins

     The true story of a young, Black man(Aaron, playing Michael Oher) who was living on the streets, and the wealthy, White family who 'adopted' him, nurtured and loved him, and how that young man succeeded - eventually graduating high school, becoming a college football phenom, and eventually becoming a first-round NFL draft selection(by the Baltimore Ravens.)
     Sandra Bullock(Leigh Anne Touhy) is more beautiful than ever, and Tim McGraw(Sean Touhy) does an admirable job of playing the rich, Tennessee restaurant franchise owner. The scene stealer is Jae Head(S.J. Touhy), who makes ADHD look like an admirable trait!
     This is a feel-good, chick flick. It is fun, if you are football fan. It is emotional in several places. Bullock is hyped to be Oscar-nominated for her performance. No, I don't think so! I liked the film, but was not overwhelmed by anything but the story-line! There are too many other good films out there, if you enjoy the big screen. For this one - wait for it on DVD - don't get blind-sided!

Where was Stupid-Intendent Tom Horne? Where was the Arizona Education Association? Where are they now? And why were they unaware of this legislation? It's official! Arizona public school teachers are now slaves! That's right - and with no one to lead them out of their bondage. A new state law, effective already, which, among other things, eliminates seniority - and facilitates the elimination of higher-salaried, veteran teachers. This newly enacted indentured servant law states the following:

1. A district is prohibited from adopting policies that use seniority as a factor in determining retention, and may not use seniority when considering reductions-in-force.

2. Seniority does not have to be considered for staff recall after layoffs(district discretion)

3. Salary reductions no longer must be applied equally. Administrators may now reduce salaries of individual employees.

4. Number of days required to correct improper teacher performance has been lowered from 85 to 60.

5. Teachers are no longer to be compensated for conducting union activities during contracted time.

6. District notification of intent to continue employment(previously April 15th) is now left to district discretion.

7. Districts are no longer required to issue contracts by May 15th - again, district discretion.

What are some of the implications?

1. Higher-salaried, veteran teachers may now be more easily purged - especially in these dire economic times!

2. Lower salaries means lesser contributions for the Arizona State Retirement System, resulting in higher paycheck deductions for teachers - a practice that has become quite common since the 'buyout purge' of the '90s.

3. Opens the door for merit-only salary increases/reductions, if any!

4. A return to the 'good-old boy' days, when if your Principal liked you, you were 'good' - regardless of your (in)abilities. If your Principal didn't like you - you were 'good-as-gone!'

5. Organized teacher activities will be severely restricted - this is a 'union-busting' action!

6. Teachers will now lack any job security, and this may trigger a 'transiency' in an community service in which student success depends upon on staff competency and stability.

7. Districts will experience declines in student achievement - the opposite for which this legislation was supposedly intended.

8. Opens the door for 'age discrimination' lawsuits, among other charges that will cripple our public schools, both economically and educationally.

Picazzo's Gourmet Pizza - 11340 W. Bell Rd, Surprise, Az(Bell Mar Plaza), and other franchised locations valleywide

Everyone has a gimmick. And when everyone knows your gimmick, and your gimmick works, you strike it big! Picazzo's gimmick - well....not so much! Things began poorly, as I was informed they do not offer Coca Cola products, but Pepsi, instead. Weak! To top it off - it was served warm, over ice, becoming quickly watered-down and more tasteless.
The sign advertised 'Happy Hour, 1/2-off appetizers from 4 to 7pm' - except to receive the discounted price, we were informed that we MUST sit outside(brrrrr) and not inside, where it was more comfortable this particular evening. The Mama's Meatz Balls were then only $4.75 - only four (ping-pong ball sized) of them - with artichoke hearts and cheese-smothered red sauce, and bland-tasting. Not worth it at THAT price, let alone for the $9.50 regular price!
Okay - let's try the pizza - pepperoni, sausage, cheese, carmelized onions and peppers, and garlic(substituted for mushrooms) - small(9" round), with Picazzo's original crust. It passed the 'edible' test, but $15.50? There are countless combos to choose from, or you can 'build' your own - starting at $10 for the stripped-down model. Either way, it wasn't worth it. The wifemate said, "What did you expect - it's 'gourmet.'" I expected it to taste good. It didn't. I expected it would be worth the money. It wasn't. As for the 'gimmick,' I'm still trying to figure out what it is! And the place was packed! Go figure!

- Through a business connection, the wifemate and I were privileged to be invited to attend the 11th Annual Welcome Home Celebration for Operation Freedom Bird - Viet Nam veterans returning from Washington, DC Veteran's Day celebrations - at Sky Harbor Airport Terminal 4, yesterday! Sponsored by Southwest Airlines, the Knights of Columbus, Sun City Country Club, and several other generous, local contributors, Operation Freedom Bird is a non-profit organization created in 1988 to assist returning Viet Nam veterans in their attempts to overcome any adverse circumstances resulting from their service in Viet Nam.
Hundreds of family members, friends, and volunteers made their return from 'The Wall' a special moment for all. Cheers and tears were plentiful, and relief and joy were everywhere! Renowned trumpeter Jesse McGuire beautifully blasted our National Anthem to begin the celebration, and sounded Taps to close the ceremonies. Southwest Airlines employee Scott Wirt belted out his original "At the Wall" and then "God Bless the USA" to rousing ovations! Curiously, no local media attended, although they were invited. I had expected that Mayor Gordon and/or Gov. Brewer would relish an opportunity to say a few words of thanks to the servicemen and women who were so neglected upon their initial return to the USA - but no one seemed to matter if they were not there, anyway.
